case study

new website for custom exhibit company

Founded in 1994, custom exhibit company Display Dynamics is one of Dayton’s “best kept secrets.” Among their most illustrious projects: the famous “Lux Mundi” (the tall statue of Jesus in front of Solid Rock Church on I-75), a full-scale recreation of the Space Shuttle in the Air Force Museum, and multiple exhibits at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

They came to ruef Design for help in going from being a secret to being recognized for what they are: a creative and highly-efficient powerhouse of talent and ideas. But with no social media presence and a dated website that wasn’t showing off their incredible work, Display Dynamics was in dire need of an online overhaul. Being designers themselves, they acknowledged the difficulty of going design work for their own company; it was was clear to the Display Dynamics leadership team that they needed an outside perspective.

our process

ruef visited Display Dynamics’ warehouse to meet in person and get a better sense of project goals. Display Dynamics already had a basic vision for the new website, and had recently updated their logo and branding, which the new website would be able to highlight. Being a minority-owned business is something that the Display Dynamics team wanted to make sure visitors saw on the new website, so the ruef team proposed a more robust About page on the new site, to highlight their team photos and bios. It was also clear that the new website needed to show off all of the beautiful photography of the company’s projects, using large-scale sliders and hi-res treated images.

Once a design strategy was in place, ruef web developers began building the website on a custom CMS platform using a custom theme ruef built specifically for the project. Content was imported from the previous website, but a new and streamlined site map strategy was implemented. The Display Dynamics design team provided extensive and thoughtful feedback throughout the live-build process.

The mobile-friendly (responsive) website launched in early January 2021. The client was provided with full Editor-level access to the site, and a training session so they could add new case studies and images and make page changes with ease. The client is already discussing next steps to continue working with ruef to develop social media campaigns and further promote the company online.
